Log Message:
Merged in code from the GD-2-3-3-FFI branch.  C-FFI doesn't work
yet, but there's a good start on the internal and external support
for the <designator-class> metaclass.

Added support for the Time library for FreeBSD systems, since some libraries
will no longer compile without it.
